Overclocking your Dell Dimension 9200

Hi there,

It's said that it is impossible to overclock a Dell computer, but sometimes you can!!
I managed to overclock a Dell Dimension 9200 with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 processor @ 2.13 Ghz. which is running now at 2.5 Ghz.


This will work on any Dell Dimension 9200. But it all depends on the PLL chip in it.


I used the following tools (thanks to the authors for writing them): ClockGen, download it if you haven't got it yet, but since Dell uses an unknown PLL chip (there is only a logo on that chip, looks a bit like a 'S') you can't use ClockGen(1.0.5.3) to do the work for you, but with ClockGen you can change a few (magic) values yourself. Another handy utility i used is the RightMark CPU Clock Utility (RMClock), to monitor the temperature of the CPU Cores), and CPU-Z.



The PLL

Thanks to Peter (PAR), Liam, and Tapety: The PLL above appears to be a 'SLG505YC56D' (Manufacturer: Silego). The good news is that this PLL is listed in ClockGen's list of PLL's so instead of manually changing its values you can have ClockGen doing it for you! Unfortunately not every Dell Dimension 9200 has the same motherboard and PLL.




Are you sure this is really what you want to do?, read about overclocking first and in case of doubt do NOT continue



First make sure your Dell is booted up all the way, low on harddisk activity, and make sure you don't run 'heavy' applications that need a lot of processor power.


Step 1. Preparing
Start ClockGen and in the 'PLL Setup' window the scroll list should say 'Not specified', meaning you don't know the type of PLL. Now press 'Read Clocks' and you will see the values below (the blue values of ClockGen are ignored here):

01 83 FF 1F CF 00 00 06 00 25 00 00 0D

Click on the '0D' (last byte) and change it to 1A in , it is the number of bytes ClockGen will read from the PLL), then press 'Update Selection', and then 'Apply Selection'. More values will appear in the PLL setup window.

If your PLL values are the same as in this picture, you can overclock your Dell by using ClockGen.

Select the 'SLG505YC56D' from the PLL list and check 'Ignore GSB/PCI'
Now use the PLL Control window to raise your speed. Do it in small increments at a time (click on 'Apply Selection' every time) untill the FSB reads 312 (going any higher might get you into problems).

The E6300 processor will run at 2.2 Ghz now, the E6400 at 2.5 Ghz., the E6600 at 2.8 Ghz, and the E6700 at 3.1 Ghz.

Update on 08/25/2007

I received many emails about Dell Dimensions having another PLL which appears to be The IDTCV174C, also listed in ClockGen




Select the 'IDTCV174C' from the PLL list and check 'Ignore GSB/PCI'. Use the PLL Control window to raise your speed. Etc.

Undo:

You can always, temporary or permanently (i.e. when system is unstable), undo the overclocking.
Get into your systemconfiguration and uncheck ClockGen in the startup section. Shut down the computer, take all the power off. Turn power and computer back on.




Notes:
1.
If you are going to overclock, you do so at your own risk.
That it works on this computer does not guarantee it will work on yours too!

2.
If you are not sure (maybe because your PLL values are totally different from the above), only perform Step 1 and email the PLL values to me.

3.
Your memory speed needs to be at least 667 Mhz. (2 x 333) !!! Use CPU-Z (the SPD tab), to check the max. speed of the memory.

4.
I tried to set the speed to 320 and 326 but from my experiences (when i set it to 40 i got lots of computer crashes, including the blue screen of death, and had to spend lots of time to recover from that again) only lower is good (example: when set to 2C, the CPU will run at 2.4 Ghz instead of 2.5), my advice is not to set it higher then 318.

5.
You are out of luck if your PLL is the SLG84516T. Although ClockGen will show almost the same values as if it was a SLG505YC56D, the SLG84516T has no control registers to set a new FSB value (so nothing will happen when you raise them).

6. I spend a lot of time (and risked a lot as well) in this, and have reason to believe that i am the 1st who has managed to overclock a Dell Dimension. I would appreciate that you give me the credits when you pass this information on to your friends. Thank you :)
